Day 7 - July 18
The Salmon Bake and Musical Revue was actually a lot of fun. The food was good. We sat outside and ate and the weather was lovely. The show was very specific to the area with the history of Dawson the theme. We enjoyed ourselves very much.
Got up this morning and realized we both are definitely in the grip of a miserable cold. I feel pretty punky but Matt is doing the sneezing and blowing nose thing pretty intensely. We are riding the bus today to Denali and are grateful that that won’t take much energy. We got our cup of coffee in the Dawson hotel which is quite good and headed to the next adventure.
The bus ride was beautiful. We had a couple of fire and construction stops but did the trip in about three hours. We had one stop at a little place where you could buy souvenirs and get a snack. We are both amazed that people choose to live here. Truly in the middle of nowhere.
Arriving at the Denali Holland America Lodge, we are struck by the beauty of the surroundings. Wow. Everything is pristine and beautiful. We got our packet, which we receive at every new location, with our keys. We were told our room may not be ready but our was and we were grateful. Both of us are feeling pretty rough.
We settled in and headed to Karsten’s in Denali Square to get something to eat. We shared a fish sandwich and a salad. Food was really good.
After we ate, we decide to go explore a bit. Got on the park shuttle and headed up to Horseshoe Lake. This was a really easy hike, about three miles round trip. It was beautiful and matched our energy levels pretty well.
We headed back and decided to get a piece of pizza at Prospector’s Pizza before we went back to our room. We got pizza with moose and reindeer meat, just to truly celebrate the area. I thought I had a piece of chocolate to eat after we returned to the room, I had bought a chocolate bar earlier. But Matt admitted to eating it. I really wanted something a bit sweet so I headed back to Denali Square and got some chocolate and some popcorn for Matt.
Matt is feeling really rough. I gave him a couple of ibuprofen and made him some tea. We headed to bed really early hoping some sleep will help. I think part of the reason we got sick is we were so sleep deprived.
Day 8 - June 19
We got up early and actually got eight hours of sleep. Sadly, our colds are in full force. I’m not as symptomatic as Matt but I don’t feel great. Today is our Tundra Tour going as far as possible into the Park. Matt is feeling like he shouldn’t be around anyone but both of us don’t want to skip the tour.
